A Simple Putting Drill to Eliminate Wrist Action and Improve Consistency

A Simple Putting Drill to Eliminate Wrist Action and Improve Consistency

Inconsistent putting often comes from excessive hand and wrist action, causing the putter face to open and close through impact. The result is poor distance control and missed short putts.

Common Putting Issues Caused by Excessive Wrist Action

Many golfers struggle with:

  • Inconsistent ball speed
  • Poor distance control
  • Missed short putts under pressure

These issues are often caused by a “windshield wiper” motion driven by the hands rather than the shoulders. Reducing wrist involvement simplifies the stroke and improves reliability.

This simple drill helps golfers stabilize their stroke and fully benefit from zero torque technology, especially when paired with a properly fit putter.

The Triangle Stability Drill

Step 1: Build the Triangle

Set up in your putting posture and place your hands together so your middle fingers are the same distance from the ground. This forms a triangle from shoulder to shoulder down through the arms.

Step 2: Rock the Triangle

Using only your shoulders, gently rock the triangle back and forth. Keep your lower body and core stable. No wrist or hand movement.

This motion trains a pendulum-style stroke powered by the body’s larger muscles.

Step 3: Hands on the Side of the Grip

Place your hands on the sides of the grip with fingers level to the ground. Rock the putter back and forth using your shoulders.

With zero torque technology, the putter face naturally stays square without manipulation, reinforcing consistent speed and direction.

Transition Back to Your Normal Grip

Switch back to your traditional reverse overlap grip while keeping the same feel:

  • Shoulder-driven motion
  • Stable wrists and hands
  • Smooth tempo

This drill is ideal before a round to reinforce proper mechanics.

Why This Drill Works Even Better with a Custom Fitting

Zero torque technology performs best when paired with a custom fit. Proper shaft length, lie angle, grip style, and head weighting ensure:

  • Correct posture and eye position
  • Natural shoulder motion
  • Maximum face stability

Why Zero Torque Technology Improves Putting Consistency

PXG's Zero Torque putters, including our Mustang ZT Putter (featured in this video) are engineered to resist face rotation during the stroke. Instead of manipulating the face with your hands, the putter naturally stays square, allowing a smoother, more repeatable arc.
