GOLF GRIP GUIDE: HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT GRIP

GOLF GRIP GUIDE: HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT GRIP

Categories Fittings, Gear, Golf Clubs

Your golf club grip is the only part of the golf club you touch on every shot, so finding the right fit matters. Grip size, texture, firmness, and shape can influence comfort, traction, feedback, grip pressure, and how connected you feel to the club.

And when it comes to your putter, grip size and profile can also influence hand placement and how active your hands and wrists feel throughout the stroke.

Here’s what to consider when choosing the right grip for your game.

START WITH THE RIGHT GRIP SIZE

Finding the right grip starts with your hands. Measure from the crease at the base of your palm to the tip of your longest finger, then use the chart below to find your recommended starting size.

Your recommended size is a starting point. Some players prefer more or less hand fill based on feel, grip pressure, and how they deliver the club.

WHAT SHOULD YOU LOOK FOR IN A GOLF GRIP?

Once you know your size, consider how you want the grip to feel and perform.

CHARACTERISTIC WHAT TO KNOW
Firmness Softer grips provide more cushioning, while firmer grips deliver more direct feedback.
Texture More texture creates additional traction and a more pronounced connection to the club.
Moisture Control Cord and aggressive textures can provide additional traction in wet, humid, or sweaty conditions.
Taper Traditional grips get smaller toward the lower hand. Reduced-taper designs maintain more lower-hand diameter and may encourage lighter grip pressure.

There’s no single combination that works best for every golfer. Your playing conditions and preference for comfort, traction, and feedback should help guide your choice.

HOW TO CHOOSE A PUTTER GRIP

Putter grips work a little differently.

Rather than managing the speed and force of a full swing, your putter grip helps create a comfortable, repeatable connection between your hands and the putter.

That makes size and profile especially important. A larger grip can provide more hand fill and may help quiet excessive hand and wrist activity, while a smaller grip typically provides more feedback and awareness of the putter.

The goal isn’t simply to go bigger or smaller. It’s to find a profile that allows you to set your hands naturally, maintain comfortable grip pressure, and make a repeatable stroke.

PXG PERFORMANCE PUTTER GRIPS

PXG Performance Putter Grips are available in seven profiles designed to accommodate different hand sizes, preferences, and putting styles.

The collection includes three Pistol profiles, three Straight profiles, and an extended Straight XL.

Putter grips

PISTOL OR STRAIGHT?

Pistol grips feature a more pronounced shape through the upper portion of the grip. This provides a defined reference beneath the upper hand and a more traditional putter-grip feel.

Straight grips maintain a more uniform profile between the upper and lower hands. This creates a more neutral sensation and can promote more consistent grip pressure.

Think of it this way:

PISTOL
Traditional shaping · Defined upper-hand reference · More shape awareness

STRAIGHT
Uniform profile · More neutral hand position · More even grip pressure
