Hi my name is Jeannie Sutherland.  I’m from SMU women’s golf and today we’re going to talk about your tempo as you chip.  I’ve got my three PXG wedges here, my 50, my 54, and my 58 and we’re gonna try and put a little bit of a similar tempo on each shot. And just see what the run-out is and talk about ways that you can work on your tempo that’ll help you be a better chipper. Alright so what I see a lot of times from people who come in for some chipping work is they get a little bit fast in their transition with their chipping. And so, one way to work on tempo is really up to you, it’s self-regulated and it we call it the counting drill. It’s a really simple drill and it’ll really help you a lot.

This is my 50 degree and we’re just going to chip a couple with counting drill. So, one is at the start, two is your transition, three is impact and four is follow through. And it looks something like this – 1, 2, 3, 4. Try it again. So that one was a little bit long so we want to maybe slow our tempo down just a tad bit.  1, 2, 3, 4. That was pretty good we’ll take that so if I’m going to go ahead and use a 54 degree and use the same tempo as that and the same length of swing. You’re going to see a little bit different result.  1, 2, 3, 4.

So, that ball is going to go a little bit higher and be a little bit softer. What happens is when people aren’t chipping well a lot of times their one and two are too close together. So, it’s like this, it’s one two and then that there’s too much hand. Sometimes the 3 is super-accentuated and when that happens it’s like it looks like this.  1, 2, 3. And there are folks who actually have chipping yips. And that’s a thing and it’s a thing with really great players. So, what we want to do is we want to be smooth from beginning to end we want our numbers to not have anymore, accentuation on each other than they should. So, it’s 1, 2, 3, 4 it looks like this 1, 2, 3, 4. And that was very nice distance control which is our main object here.  I hope this tip helps you and helps your chipping. Thanks so much to PXG for the beautiful clubs that they provide us. Makes the game a lot easier.
